I recently completed a Google UX Certification, during which I was tasked with creating a website and app for a company wanting to provide free basic medical training via online videos, with the possibility of offering more advanced courses and certifications in the future.
You never know where or when medical expertise may be needed, but finding time to take a class may involve a dedicated schedule and travel time, arranging babysitting, or taking time off of work.
The Solution
The My Medical Trainer app was conceived to provide free training via web-based videos that anyone can access on-the-go. Stuck in traffic? Learn how to treat a sprain. Commuting in the bus? Find out all about bruises. Taking a time-out on the toilet? Train your brain with quizzes on information you have watched and read previously.
The My Medical Trainer app lets you learn basic medical care on your own time.
Understanding the User
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
Personas
Several personas were created for this project, including:
Julia – a 27 year old mother of two young children who wants to know what to do if her children are involved in an accident.
Caleb – a 17 year old high school student who is interested in becoming a paramedic after graduating.
Molly – a 24 year old teacher who wants to learn medical care in case of an emergency at her school.
Competitor Research
To learn how other companies in the same market are presenting their offerings, a competitor analysis was conducted and analyzed.
Sketches
To begin the design stage, I started with several basic sketches of possible ways I could structure the layout I wanted the user to quickly be able to find course information and begin learning.
Wireframes
Once the final sketches were completed, I laid out the design as a simple wireframe in Adobe XD.
Low-Fidelity Prototypes
With the wireframes completed, it was time to incorporate real text to get a feel for how the site would really feel and be used.
User Testing
I conducted user testing before finalizing the designs and moving into High Fidelity design. User testing revealed some minor pain points that are demonstrated below.
The Final Design
The purpose of this website was to allow users of all ages to quickly find information on and begin learning through a basic, free medical course. With this in mind, I wanted to have a clean, simple layout that most users would feel comfortable with.
The final high-fidelity prototype can be accessed below.
